A message from Tatiana Roc, President, Liberty Massachusetts

Dear Liberty customer,

As we head into another New England winter, we know energy costs are an important part of every household budget. And we work hard to make sure you have safe, reliable service while keeping costs manageable.

Beginning November 1, Liberty, along with other Massachusetts utilities, will start a new state-mandated Income-Eligible Discount Rate Program. The program replaces our current single discount with six discount levels based on household income and whether your natural gas service is used for heating or non-heating purposes.

If you qualify, these new discounts can help lower your monthly energy bill. The amount of your discount will vary based on household income and whether your natural gas service is used for heating or non-heating purposes. The details are listed here (link).

Another key change to this program is that if you are eligible for the new income-eligible discount rates, you will no longer contribute to the program as you did in previous years. This means program costs will be shared among fewer customers and may result in higher bills if you do not qualify.

We know any change to your gas bill matters. That's why we want to make sure you know what help is available and how to get it. If you're having trouble paying your natural gas bill, we offer several programs and payment options:

Arrearage Management Program (AMP): If you’re income-eligible and have an active account with a past-due balance, AMP may be able to help. As you make payments toward your current balance through a payment plan, the program pays a portion of the past-due balance.

Payment Plans: If you've fallen behind on your bill, a payment plan can help spread your past-due balance over time.

Levelized Budget Billing: This option helps make monthly bills steadier by calculating payments using a rolling 12-month history. Because the average is recalculated each month, the payment may change slightly from month to month.

Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP): If you qualify, HEAP can help pay a portion of your winter heating costs.

Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fund: Run by The Salvation Army, this fund helps you pay your energy bills if you’re facing a temporary financial crisis and you don’t qualify for other fuel-assistance programs.
